Rice, Reheated: The Ville's Kitchen Report Card, June 1-7
Summer's heating up in Louisville, and unfortunately so were a few cold-holding units this week. Between Derby recovery and graduation parties, our inspectors kept busy from Bardstown Road to the Outer Loop. Let's get into it.

A Quick Refresher on How the Grades Work in the Ville
- Grade A (green): A passing grade indicating a generally safe facility. Score of 85–100 with no priority violations — serious issues most likely to cause foodborne illness, such as improper food holding temperatures.
- Grade B (blue): Facility is "under review" while health officials work with them to pass future routine inspections. Issued after failing two routine inspections in a row, or automatically during a follow-up inspection if the facility had to close because of an imminent health hazard (regardless of prior grades). Patrons should be mindful.
- Grade C (red): Facility has failed its inspection. Issued for any of these reasons: (1) one or more priority violations, such as poor hygienic practices, lack of hot/cold water, or improper sanitizing — even with a score as high as 98; (2) score below 85 due to a high number of non-priority violations; or (3) an imminent health hazard requiring closure (e.g., infestation, loss of electricity or water). These are serious and require a follow-up within 7–10 days.
- Priority violations: High risk for foodborne illness. Even one is enough to drop a place to a C.
Second Servings: Redemption Arcs Well Done
Good news travels fast around here — 14 follow-ups this week, and most walked away with their pride (and grades) intact.
Back in the A club: Holiday Inn, Gore's Smokeout BBQ, Culver's, Daisuki Sushi, El Mundo, Game Restaurant, Indi's Restaurant, and Pinnacle Management of Park Louisville all bounced back from prior C grades to a clean A. That's a lot of kitchens that got their act together.
Still simmering: Fire Oven Pizza climbed from a C to a perfect 100 score, but lands on a B grade — still under the health department's watchful eye while they confirm the fix sticks. A strong showing, but not quite out of the oven yet.
Cautionary Cuisine: Where the Cold Chain Broke Down
Ten spots failed inspection this week, and if there's a theme, it's temperature control — the unsung hero of food safety that too many walk-in coolers let down.
Georgia's Sweet Potato Pie Company — Score: 98
A reminder that even a near-perfect score can still mean a C — details on the priority violation weren't listed, but the grade stands. LouVUE's Take: Proof that in Louisville, the numbers don't always tell the whole story — grade beats score every time.
BP Smyrna — Score: 80
LouVUE's Take: Gas station eats can be a gamble — this week the odds weren't great.
Mama Sherry's Kool Treats & More — Score: 91
Improper handwashing, plus no running water on site. LouVUE's Take: No water means no safe handwashing, no sanitizing — a hard stop for any kitchen.
Crave Louisville — Score: 87
Chili held at a dangerously low 120°F, spoiled lettuce in use, a dirty vegetable slicer, and a PIC who couldn't answer basic food safety questions. LouVUE's Take: A rough plate all around — hopefully round two is more craveable.
Sol Aztecas — Score: 89
Lettuce and cheese at 51°F, rice improperly cooled overnight, and — the big one — the kitchen's only hand sink wasn't draining. LouVUE's Take: No working hand sink is a five-alarm problem, not a garnish.
Jet's Pizza — Score: 94
Cold holding unit running at 45°F, degreaser stored too close to clean dishes. LouVUE's Take: A near-miss on the score, but chemicals near dishware is no small potatoes.
Uptown Cafe — Score: 96
Nearly the whole walk-in cooler was out of temp — readings up to 55°F. LouVUE's Take: When the whole cooler's off, it's not one bad apple — it's the barrel.
AMVETS Post 1 — Score: 94
Hot dogs and deli meat sitting at a scorching 58°F. LouVUE's Take: Corrected and discarded on the spot — good response, bad start.
Ace Sushi @ Norton Healthcare — Score: 90
Sushi rice discarded over HACCP recordkeeping gaps, improper handwashing, and undated crab meat. LouVUE's Take: Sushi safety runs on precision — this one needs a tighter roll.
Kroger L-327 — Score: 86
LouVUE's Take: Details were light this week, but the C stands — worth a look before your next grocery run.
The Check, Please: Keep 'Em Honest
Ten C's is a lot for one week, but the flip side — eight comebacks to Grade A — shows the system's doing its job. As always, a C isn't a death sentence, just a "watch this space." Check LouVUE before your next reservation, and we'll see you at the table next week.
